See the updated programme of the seminar on Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization in European Regions (RIS3)

GUNi, together with the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) and the Smart Specialisation Platform (S3Platform) of the European Commission organizes a seminar on “Regional competitiveness and universities. The role of universities in regional strategies for smart specialization in Europe”, next June 3 in Barcelona. 

The theoretical frameworks highlight the prominent role of universities in the design and implementation of Research and Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization (RIS3) in European regions as a tool to ensure the maximum impact of the prioritization of the European Structural Funds. RIS3 are a new methodology that aims to target public resources more effectively and efficiently to ensure regional economic and social development. This new paradigm has important implications both in the governance of public policies and in the implementation of projects and initiatives in the region.

The first development actions of RIS3 are currently underway. At the Seminar “Regional competitiveness and universities. The role of universities in regional strategies for smart specialization in Europe”, which is to be held in the framework of the activities of the Plataforma Coneixement, Territori i Innovació (Plataforma CTI) Knowledge, Territory and Innovation Platform, organized by the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP), the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNi) and the Smart Specialisation Platform (S3Platform) of the European Commission, the aim will be to gain in-depth knowledge of the real role of universities in the design of RIS3 and what their involvement is in their implementation. Therefore, the proposal is first a global analysis of the role of universities in RIS3, and second, to learn first-hand of cases of regions where higher education institutions are playing a prominent role.

The seminar, which will take place on 3 June in Barcelona, ​​will be attended by academic experts, public officials and professionals who will analyse the role of universities in RIS3, as well as regional and university officials from several specific cases of regions of Europe whose experience may be of great benefit for mutual learning and improvement.
