The Autonomous University of Yucatán bolsters its commitment in promoting Gender Equality

Through the program “The strengthening of the gender perspective in the Autonomous University of Yucatan (UADY)”, practices are being developed in order to overcome inequality between women and men, both in the institution and society. 

The UADY is committed with gender equality and, to better achieve this objective has developed the project The strengthening of the gender perspective” (Fortalecimiento de la Perspectiva de Género en la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán). This initiative aims to identify the existing problems in the institution regarding inequality, discrimination and human rights and engages all the academic community in mainstreaming activities improving equality policies.

In order to implement this idea, three main axes are being applied: research, awareness and diffusion. The first axis, research, allowed to know better the gender issue in the UADY and to implement good practices transversally at the institution. At the awareness stage, seminars, conferences and various events are made to raise consciousness in the university community and in the society regarding the gender perspective. The diffusion is focused on the free flow of information to the university community and to all people interested in gender issues through an extensive bibliography about this issue from the different areas of knowledge. As part of this initiative, a virtual library has been developed in order to spread even more the knowledge about this topic.

This project started in 2010 and has been part of both the Institutional Development Plan 2010-2020 and the Integrating Program of Social Responsibility at the University. During those years the project has been implemented collectively with different departments from the UADY. In 2013, as a result of this task, it was published the book “Men and Women of the Autonomous University of Yucatan. A Descriptive Analysis from a Gender Perspective” (Hombres y Mujeres de la Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán. Un Análisis Descriptivo con Perspectiva de Género). This publication aimed to present the gender situation of the institution among academic, administrative, directives and the university community and thereby, better address the activities to reduce inequalities on campus.
