The University of Sarajevo works on building of a strong, autonomous and integrated academic community of teachers and associates, researchers, artists and students and all the other employed persons, incorporated into the international University network
In view of such a mission definition, we see the University in the next period as:

• The main bearer of permanent education system in the society, directed to the advancement of postgraduate programmes (academic, scientific and professional), relevant for the social development, and, at the same time, attractive and competitive in the European area;

• A strong and recognizable centre of academic, scientific and artistic activities, that will bring together national and international teams around challenging and quality projects;

• A key place in the country for the development of evaluation models and quality assurance in higher education;

• The place of development of undergraduate and postgraduate interdisciplinary studies

University has to fulfill successfully its primary task, which consists of:

• Educating experts and professionals that will contribute in their work and public engagement to the increase of overall quality of life of all the citizens in the country;

• Education new generations of University teachers and researchers, who will give their contribution to the development of the system of higher education, academic teaching processes and research;

• Bringing together of people, know-how and information within the academic community, as well as with other subsystems in the society, in order to give an impulse for the community of knowledge, learning and tolerance;

• Creating conditions for the efficient involvement into the international academic community.

In terms of research and science:
 

• Strengthening of scientific and professional activities in terms of contest, quality and scope

• Promotion of international measures of academic recognition in university scientific activity

• Strengthening of cooperation of the University with public scientific institution

• Insuring of condition for minimum of scientific activity for the university lecturers

• Development of balanced range of scientific fields and branches considering the existing lack of scientists and experts as well as need of development of particular fields

• Institutional support to the projects of knowledge transfer towards the economy and towards the projects of direct implementation of knowledge

Providing university education and conducting research activities within 96 programmes  at 23 member institutions within the following fields:

• Social sciences
• Medical sciences
• Technical sciences
• Natural sciences
• Humanities, and
• Arts
