Pedagogies for IELTS Preparation: A Teacher Professional Development Program

UNESCO Chair Program
&
Center for Teaching and Learning
Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, Sharjah

Aims
This Professional Development program was borne out of the need to raise the students’ level of English in government schools.

It is this country’s vision that high school students will be able to graduate from school in the near future with an IELTS Band of 5 or higher, ready to start their Bachelor degree studies at one of the federally funded Universities. Given that currently the majority of high school graduates spend up to 2 years attending foundation courses to bring their English to the minimum level required for Bachelor studies, high schools have an enormous task at their hands. In response to this, the proposed program has two aims. First, it will deliver a teacher professional development (PD) program to 47 3rd Cycle High School teachers in the Sharjah Education Zone. The sessions will familiarize teachers with the IELTS format and also the pedagogies involved in preparing students for taking the IELTS exam. Second, as part of the program, SHCT will prepare a set of resources for teachers to use in the classroom.
