Mission / Vision

To train high level professionals with quality, so that they may contribute in a creative and innovative way to the sustainable economic and socio-cultural development of Mozambique.

Goals

(1) To stimulate cultural creation and the development of scientific spirit and critical and reflective thinking; (2) To train professionals in the different areas of knowledge, capable of integrating into the labour market in a competitive manner and participating in the sustainable development of the country; (3) To provide spaces for Scientific Research, Extension and Innovation, aiming at the development of science and technology, the construction and dissemination of knowledge; (4) To promote the dissemination of cultural, scientific and technical knowledge which constitutes the heritage of humanity and to communicate knowledge by teaching, publication or other means.

Main activities

Teaching, Teacher Training, Research and Community Outreach

Access, equity and quality

(1) Promotion of access and expansion of higher education to the whole country; (2) Participation in joint projects such as the Theory Practice Balance in Teacher Education (TEPATE) with the Universities of Lapland and JAMK of Finland; (3) The European Union-Funded ERASMUS Humanitarian Action (HUMACT) with the ISCTE, Portugal and a network of other world universities.

Curricular innovation in higher education institutions (HEIs)

Introduction of online and hybrid teaching and learning; diversification of sources of revenue; regular curricular reforms, among others.

Opening up higher education to society

Definitely; especially through our strong involvement with the ministries of (1) Education and (2) Higher Education, Science and Technology. Our research findings inform theory and practice in the Mozambican national education system. 

Higher education's role in addressing major global challenges

UPM strictly links teaching, research and extension for the production and qualitative dissemination of knowledge for the transformation of Mozambican society towards attaining sustainable development.

Higher education's contribution to sustainability

Through our work we envisage to fulfil the Five-Year Government Programme and the Sustainable Development Goals set out in Agenda 2030.

Social responsibility within higher education

Involvement and active participation in community projects on promotion of renewable energy, sustainable production of food, etc.
