To pursue excellence in teaching, research and scholarship through the provision of world class facilities and opportunities for education, training and employment to all those able to benefit without any form of discrimination

To enhance human advancement, prosperity and welfare through teaching, research, and information technologyand and that promot applications of knowledge, promote discipline and emphasize entrepreneurship, and sustainable management of resources

Goals

The strategic plan for 2007-2017 is premised on the expansion, completion and consolidation of the developmental initiatives of the earlier period while taking cognizance of the lessons learnt; initiation and pursuit of new programmes and proactive interventions that would improve funding and enhance quality assurance; and the transformation of IUO into a truly competitive and global centre of excellence.

Targets
•Transformation of IUO into an internationally competitive centre of academic excellence and maintenance of its position as Nigeria’s leading private university;
•Continued quality assurance of academic programmes through national and international accreditations
•Establishment of autonomous Igbinedion Universities in West Africa to ensure a solid basis for the planned international revolution
•Improvement, expansion and consolidation of existing academic programmes with special focus on Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, Law, and Business
•Further development and expansion of IUTH as centre of clinical studies for medical students 
•Expansion of research capacities through establishment of a research directorate headed by a Dean and new specialist research programmes designed to further the millennium development goals (MDGs) in poverty alleviation, solar energy research, HIV/AIDS, entrepreneurship, cancer research, and conflict management, as well as the strengthening of the Centre for Presidential Studies
