Chalmers UNESCO-professur i Lärande för hållbar utveckling

To promote an integrated system of research, training, information and documentation in the field of ESD. It will serve as a means of facilitating collaboration of high-level, internationally recognized researchers and teaching staff of the University and other institutions in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe and North America, and in other regions of the world. 
The purpose is also to integrate and implement national and regional policies and strategies for sustainable development through its University programmes and practices, and promote a multidisciplinary approach to learning, research and training, with collaborating UNESCO chairs and civil society in the North and the South in order to promote mutual understanding of the principles and values of sustainable development through higher education.

Through their education the students should prepare to contribute to a sustainable development during a forthcoming professional life of about four decades. They should develop competencies and learn to master tools to be able to discern and solve problems in a complex reality.
Chalmers should be a role model and a driving force in the societal development towards sustainability. 

A major part of the work within the chair is pursued through the ESD reform project. The task for the ESD project is to develop an organization that handles ESD at Chalmers, which means that it:

• Guarantees and continuously improves quality in Chalmers basic courses in SD (the compulsory 7.5 ECTS credits).
• Guarantees and continuously improves quality of SD content in other courses.
• Gives support to those who order SD courses.
• Gives support to students when choosing SD courses.
• Gives internal and external information about ESD.
• Gives effective cooperation with internal and external (foremost Göteborg University) stakeholders within ESD.
• Gives a good meeting place for Students and for teachers with interest in the area.
• Supports further education of non-teaching personnel within the SD area.
• Supports the development of a campus reflecting Chalmers initiative for SD

The reform project pursues different activities along the nine action lines describing the objectives. The experiences are continuously shared with others nationally and internationally within the scope of the UNESCO chair.
