Mission / Vision
The vision of AAU is “to be the leading advocate for higher education in Africa, with the capacity to provide support for its member institutions in meeting national, continental and global needs”.
The motto is “The Voice of Higher Education”
The mission of AAU is “to enhance the quality and relevance of higher education in Africa and strengthen its contribution to Africa’s development”.
Goals

To lead dialogue and policy debates around key issues in African higher education and promote the role of universities in sustainable development

Main activities
- Promoting interchange, contact and cooperation among university institutions in Africa.
- Collecting, classifying and disseminating information on Higher Education and Research, particularly in Africa.
- Promoting cooperation among African institutions in curriculum development and in the determination of equivalence of degrees.
- Encouraging increased contact between AAU members and the international academic world
- Studying and making known the educational and related needs of African University institutions and, as far as practicable, to coordinate the means whereby those needs may be met
- Encouraging the development and wider use of African languages.
- Organizing, encouraging and supporting Seminars and Conferences between African university teachers, administrators and others dealing with problems of higher education in Africa
