The Social Commitment of Universities

On 18 and 19 October 2004 GUNi held the 1st International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education. The aim of the Conference was to discuss issues related to the social commitment of universities, within the general framework of the GUNi, and to launch two of the GUNi’s projects: the World Report on Higher Education and the Observatory on Best University Practices.

The I International Barcelona Conference on Higher Education brought together 432 experts on higher education from 44 countries. All of the five UNESCO regions (Africa, Asia, the Arab nations, South America and the Caribbean, and Europe-North America) were represented. Four Nobel laureates also gave presentations at the event, to which specialists in higher education also contributed.
