The Rector of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) Joan Elias has been appointed President of the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) and GUNi President for one year. Together with Peter Wells, Chief of the Section for Higher Education at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, he has began to be part of the GUNi Executive Committee.
Last February 8, the new directive board of the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP) was established. Joan Elias, Rector of the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) has been elected President of ACUP. Therefore, he has become the GUNi President for 2019. In this way, Joan Elias takes over Josep A. Planell, Rector of the Universtat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) as GUNi President.
Joan Elias (Barcelona, 1956) is Rector of the UB since December 2016. He has been the head of studies and dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Vice-Rector of the Universitat de Barcelona and Secretary General of the Interuniversity Council of Catalonia. Since February 2018, he is also the president of the CRUE Internationalization and Cooperation Sectoral Commission.
During the meeting, the members of the new ACUP board were elected as well: Universitat Rovira i Virgili's Rector, María José Figueras, as first Vice President; the President of the Social Council of the Universitat de Lleida (UdL), Delfí Robinat, as second Vice President; the President of the Social Council of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Ramon Carbonell, as third Vice-President, and the rector of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Josep A. Planell, who until now was the President and has become the Secretary.
