‘Introduction to Responsible Research and Innovation’, outline of the HEIRRI workshops in Brasil and Mexico
The GUNi's Regional Office in Latin America and Caribbean, together with the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM Instituto de Investigaciones Sobre la Universidad y la Educación), Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and the Global University Network for Innovation Secretariat, organized two workshops 'Introduction to Responsible Research and Innovation' on the 23rd and 25th January 2018 in Brasil and Mexico in the framework of the HEIRRI internationalization plan to spread the project amongst Higher Education Institutions outside Europe.
The two workshops were focused on the Train the trainers course on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI), which is part of the educational materials developed by the Pompeu Fabra University within the framework of the HEIRRI project, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
Despite the fact that teachers acknowledge the importance of steering research and innovation processes towards Responsible Research and Innovation, they are not always sure about how this could be done. This one-day in-service training workshop, “Facilitating reflection on Responsible Research and Innovation”, addresses this issue and proposes a way to support university professors and other actors in higher education who want to promote RRI in their institutions. The workshops were attended by around 50 participants from Brasil and Mexico.
In the two workshops, participants envisioned possible futures connected to R&I developments. They reflected on strategies and ways how to steer these developments and their possible wider societal and environmental impacts using concepts of RRI. Then, the course especially focused on how to integrate such reflection on issues of RRI into higher education teaching and training. Together in groups participants developed different approaches and designs for teaching RRI to various higher education audiences.
The two workshops was hosted by the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação) and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). The trainer for this course was Prof. Gema Revuelta, director of the Studies Centre on Science, Communication and Society at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and coordinator of the HEIRRI project. The workshop was organised by the Association of Public Universities of Catalonia (ACUP) and the Global University Network for Innovation (GUNi) as partner of the HEIRRI project consortium.
What is the HEIRRI Project?
HEIRRI (Higher Education Institutions and Responsible Research and Innovation) is a European project funded by the Science for Society H2020 call. HEIRRI is leaded by Pompeu Fabra University and has 9 partners from across Europe representing individual institutions, associations of universities and science institutions. HEIRRI aims to promote Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in higher education institutions, and specifically to provide teaching programmes and materials in different formats for higher education institutions to integrate into the curriculums of their courses. A global scope and expertise on RRI is provided by the HEIRRI consortium. Visit the project's blog for further information www.heirri.eu
