Of settler heritage, I am proud to be a visitor to Coast and Straits Salish traditional territory. Currently a Professor of Community Development in the School of Public Administration and interim Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Human and Social Development. Founding Director of the Office of Community-Based Research (2006-2011) and former Dean of the Faculty of Education (2001-2006).
My research focus has been on international perspectives of social justice in the context of adult education, community development, community-based research and social movements. I currently serve as the Secretary for the Global Alliance on Community Engaged Research. I have worked in Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean and Asia building local teaching and learning capacities over a period of 40 years.
I have supported the internationalization agenda at UVic actively since 2001 including supporting the LTC’s internationalization of the curriculum initiatives, establishing partnerships in Uganda, Spain and India. I have served as the UVic representative to the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute where we increased our funding significantly over the period of my service. I have been a member of the planning committee for the annual Diversity Research Conference and have been a member of the Advisory Committee for the Office of Indigenous Affairs. I remain a member of the Africa Support Group and am teaching in the African Studies interdisciplinary course.
I have led international research projects with funding from SSHRC and IDRC
