Corrosion and sustainability: a problem pending to be solved

BIEZMA, M. V., (2010)

Corrosion is a phenomenon of degradation of metallic materials that produces a great impact from a social, environmental and economic point of view. Along my personal academic experience in the field of Materials Science at the University of Cantabria, I have felt the necessity to include a new methodological focus. The basis of the academic subjects related to corrosion is scientific, and we cannot ignore its effect on every industrial process and the relationship this can have with sustainability. My aim is not only provide students with knowledge about the behavior of materials but to raise their awareness of the importance of ecological considerations due to: metallic resources are overexploited, the environmental impact resulting from any failure in service is unpredictable and the necessity to point out the recycling importance. The aim of this paper is to point out the strong relation that can be created between corrosion and sustainability.
