The STEP 2015 program aimed at short term (2010), integrating sustainability and social commitment in all curricula of the degree qualifications of the UPC to ensure that the perspective of sustainability and social commitment are present in all curricula. As long-term goal (2015), the STEP 2015 wants to reach levels of international excellence in the trinomial Technology-Sustainability-Education.

We want to explain our work by the School of Architecture of Barcelona (UPC) trying to make more sustainable all our activities. Implication of the different agents (teachers, students, administrative people, ...) has appeared as crucial

STEP 2015 is a UPC program to educate highly qualified students in order to integrate sustainability into their professional activity and their sphere of influence. The UPC wants students educated with knowledge, attitudes and values in order to work as change agents to sustainability models.

The values of STEP 2015 are development of conceptual bases, identifying the particular referents and preparing practical tools to the sustainability education. To make this it is necessary an interdisciplinary dialog and networking.

Pilot phase objectives:
  • Creation of a core-developer team and strengthening of internal relations into each educational center about sustainability through particular activities.
  • Definition of innovation lines to sustainability education into each center
  • Definition of curricular strategy of each center to ensure the education about sustainability, taking into account the environmental sustainability education.
  • Generation of support materials to be used for the educational center and to be introduced into their study plan.

Labor made during the pilot phase into each educational center:
  • Project design/work plan of each educational center in accord with STEP 2015 global criteria.
  • Development of provided activities.
  • Evaluation of project results and their development.

The first activity made in the school of Architecture of Barcelona was the identification of the most interested students, professors and references architects (the latest affect a lot attitudes of persons).

For this reason the STEP-ETSAB designed a sequence of activities to know:
  • The implication of faculty, students and administrative staff.
  • A study of ETSAB building elements to renew.
  • How to involve all people not interested.

The objectives of the project for the 2010 year are the same as those of the pilot phase. Along 2010 year it is necessary to work on:
  • Project design/work plan to each educational center.
  • Discussion about the project.
  • Development of activities of each individual educational center project.
  • Active participation in the meeting of the UPC-STEP net.
  • Result project evaluation and their development.

Planned activities:
  • Analysis of the previous study of resources and survey data. Discussion by the school’s internal network. Firs draft models.
  • Ask ICE completion of course for teachers “Facilities in Sustainable Building” (provisional title). We expect to extend the course to students and master students last year.
  • Preparation of competitions for undergraduate and postgraduate students, with the topic of Sustainability.

  • Initiation of an internal network of teachers and other interested members of community.
  • Participation in the Workshop on Occupability March 16, 2010.
  • Replacement of fluorescent light for LEDs in the main aisle of Management Offices. From 6 April 2010.
