Strikes and demonstrations force Chilean universities to lower admission requirementsAfter dramatic "tomas", or takeovers of high schools and universities, Chilean administrators have scrambled to find enough students to fill slots over 22% of academic departments. The ensuing chaos from a year of turmoil caused by high school and university students has disqualified more than 19,000 high school seniors from taking the country’s standardized test for university admission. After these events, over 300 academic departments in Chile were not able to fulfill their admission quotas and were therefore forced to accept students who would not have been accepted under other circumstances.
