Topic 5. Transforming education for sustainability

Topic 5Education for sustainability (ESD) has to be identified as the new way for relearning on a grand scale. ESD is about new ways of knowing and learning how to be human. This education has to contribute to sustaining the integrity of the individual. If we have to imagine new ways of living and behaving, we must have the capacity of promoting and evaluating social change (FIEN, 2005).

The main competences that a person would be expected to have in order to be able to contribute in an appropriate way to sustainable development are: to understand the need for change to a sustainable way of doing things, individually and collectively; to have sufficient knowledge and skills to decide and act in a way that favours sustainable development; and to be able to work with others in taking collective decisions and implementing actions that favour sustainable development.

From the agreements reached during the World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (Bonn, 2009), it was resolved that HEI are facing several challenges in its journey towards sustainable development.
