“Higher education institutions should increase their interdisciplinary focus and promote critical thinking and active citizenship. This would contribute to sustainable development, peace, wellbeing and the realization of human rights...
Higher education must not only give solid skills for the present and future world but must also contribute to the education of ethical citizens committed to the construction of peace, the defense of human rights and the values of democracy.”
Final Communiqué World Conference on Higher Education (WCHE, Paris 2009) LINK
Higher education (HE) can be focused on training professionals or on educating citizens who will interchange value with society through their professional exercise.
Professional activity and decision making in any trade could be done under a view of its contribution to the common good. For that, a sense of citizenship has to be developed to contribute to a wide range of collective goals. Being prepared as a citizen who will interact with society through the exercise of a profession requires a deep understanding of human life and existence. It means educating for glocality, democracy, citizenship, intercultural relations, peace building and a deep understanding of life’s dynamics with special focus on human dimensions. Any profession has consequences and interacts with these items.
Professional actions are essential to countries’ wealth creation and development. This decision-making can take place through approaches that are either positive or negative for the global progress of humankind and societies, in both developed and developing countries.
It should be essential for society to find out how to preserve the common interest implicit in the results of professional activities. Individuals who access HE does not only obtain personal returns, but also can, and should be aware of how their activities can contribute or detract from the common good.
Proposing individual and collective responsibility in professional decision-making within new global ethical paradigms will be a subject for the intermediate future. An ethical dimension must be introduced into all disciplines as something inherent to knowledge, making it necessary to form into a singular body those doing the learning and the topics of their education.
