"Our admission (to UNESCO) is a great source of pride," said President Abbas to delegates and guests. "Writers, artists and Palestinian researchers have played a vital role in preserving the culture and the identity of our people. UNESCO has also played a key role and has been a loyal ally."

In his welcoming speech to Palestine, the Director General said: "UNESCO is now working on the front line to build a more peaceful, more democratic and more just world. Human dignity is our starting point and the measure of our success. Solidarity is our guide and our goal.

" Multilateralism has never been as important as today. The entry of Palestine as a member of UNESCO should mean an opportunity for everyone to get together around shared values and ambitions of renewed peace” said Bokova. On October 31st, UNESCO became the first UN agency to admit Palestine as a full member after the vote of its member states within the General Conference. With Palestine, the number of members of UNESCO amounted to 195.
