American universities to give e-textbooks a try
Five universities in the Unites States are set to order e-textbooks in bulk in an effort to ease the burden of rising textbook prices - on both the students and the universities themselves - through a deal jointly brokered between the participating universities, Internet2 and publisher McGraw-Hill.
The five universities to place the order are Cornell University, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of Minnesota, the University of Virginia, and the University of Wisconsin. The books are being ordered only for a sparse selection of courses, but university leaders are optimistic that the program will go well and are hoping to expand the number of courses offering the electronic publications, as well as the number of universities and publishers involved. The program gives the publishers a more stable source of income, while also offering textbooks to students at a highly discounted price.
