Professor of Microbiology at the Univerity Rovira i Virgili
María José Figueras, is Professor of Microbiology at the Univerity Rovira i Virgili. Since 1990 has been working in the field of health-related environmental microbiology (HREM), especially in the contamination of water. She has participated in several European research projects Aqua-Chip, Healthy-Water, Epibathe, Virobathe, Viroclime and Aquavalens. She has been acting as advisor on the management of risk derived from contaminated bathing waters for the Catalan Agency of Water of the Catalan Environmental Department, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), the European Commission, and the Spanish Ministry of Environment and the one of Health and Consumer Affairs. She have published over 180 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters. From January 2015 until December 2018 she has been the Spanish Ambassador of the American Society of Microbiology and from June 2018 onwards she is the rector of the University Rovira i Virgili.
